Microbiology & Bioprocess Internship (Wet Lab)

Apply microbiology and bioprocess techniques to a real question, such as screening environmental isolates for an enzyme activity or optimising a fermentation, with close supervision at the bench.

Wet lab4, 8, 12, 24 weeks · Full-time at the bench, Monday to FridayCertificate with verification ID
Bacterial growth curves (OD₆₀₀) in a rich and a minimal medium, showing lag, exponential and stationary phases. Growth rate is estimated from the exponential phase only.

About this internship

After induction and a skills phase, you run a project that combines isolation and identification, growth and fermentation, and quantitative analysis of the product.

All organisms are Risk Group 1. You keep a professional notebook and present your results at the end.

Example projects

01

Screen soil isolates for extracellular enzyme activity and characterise the best producer

02

Optimise media for a fermentation in shake flasks

03

Compare growth kinetics of a production strain under different conditions

04

Quantify a fermentation product by HPLC

Eligibility

  • Students in the final year of B.Sc., B.Tech., M.Sc. or M.Tech. in microbiology, biotechnology, food technology or biochemical engineering; recent graduates are welcome
  • Undergraduate microbiology
  • Participants must be 18 or older and complete the safety induction

Selection criteria

  1. Academic record and relevant coursework (no minimum percentage is applied mechanically; the whole application is read)
  2. A statement of purpose of 150–300 words: what you want to learn, why this track and what you hope to do next
  3. Evidence of initiative: projects, coursework, code, posters or laboratory experience, if you have any
  4. Performance in a short, track-specific task (sent after screening)
  5. A 20-minute online interview on your motivation and reasoning, not on memorised facts

Application procedure

  1. Apply online

Complete the application form with your academic details, track and duration, and a statement of purpose. It takes about ten minutes.

  2. Screening

An admissions reviewer reads every application and replies within five working days, by e-mail.

  3. Short task

Shortlisted applicants receive a track-specific task: a small analysis, a reading-and-reasoning exercise or a protocol question. It is designed to take two to three hours.

  4. Interview

A 20-minute online conversation about your motivation, your task and how you approach problems.

  5. Offer and onboarding

Successful applicants receive an offer letter with the start date, mentor, project area and fee. Your place is confirmed when the fee is paid.

  6. Internship and review

Weekly mentor reviews, a mid-point check and a final presentation, followed by your certificate.
