Bioinformatics & Genomics Research Internship

Work on a defined genomics project, from raw public data to a written result, with a mentor who reviews your code and your reasoning every week. This is the closest experience to working in a computational genomics group.

Volcano plot from a differential-expression test. Genes beyond |log₂FC| > 1 at 5% FDR are coloured: up-regulated in vermilion, down-regulated in blue.

About this internship

Interns join a small cohort and are matched to a project in NGS variant analysis, bulk or single-cell transcriptomics, genome assembly or microbial genomics. Projects use public data so that results can be shown in a portfolio.

The first week covers set-up, data access and project planning. From then on you work in weekly cycles: plan, analyse, review and revise, ending with a report and a presentation.

Example projects

01

Reproduce the differential-expression analysis of a published RNA-seq study and test its robustness

02

Characterise antimicrobial-resistance genes across public bacterial genomes

03

Annotate cell types in a public single-cell dataset and compare annotation methods

04

Benchmark two variant callers on a Genome in a Bottle sample

Eligibility

  • Students in the final year of B.Sc., B.Tech., M.Sc., M.Tech. or a PhD in life sciences, biotechnology, bioinformatics, microbiology, genetics or related fields; recent graduates are welcome
  • Basic familiarity with the Linux command line and either Python or R (or completion of a Vedicgen foundations course)
  • A laptop with at least 8 GB of RAM and a reliable internet connection

Selection criteria

  1. Academic record and relevant coursework (no minimum percentage is applied mechanically; the whole application is read)
  2. A statement of purpose of 150–300 words: what you want to learn, why this track and what you hope to do next
  3. Evidence of initiative: projects, coursework, code, posters or laboratory experience, if you have any
  4. Performance in a short, track-specific task (sent after screening)
  5. A 20-minute online interview on your motivation and reasoning, not on memorised facts

Application procedure

  1. Apply online

Complete the application form with your academic details, track and duration, and a statement of purpose. It takes about ten minutes.

  2. Screening

An admissions reviewer reads every application and replies within five working days, by e-mail.

  3. Short task

Shortlisted applicants receive a track-specific task: a small analysis, a reading-and-reasoning exercise or a protocol question. It is designed to take two to three hours.

  4. Interview

A 20-minute online conversation about your motivation, your task and how you approach problems.

  5. Offer and onboarding

Successful applicants receive an offer letter with the start date, mentor, project area and fee. Your place is confirmed when the fee is paid.

  6. Internship and review

Weekly mentor reviews, a mid-point check and a final presentation, followed by your certificate.

  • Code review on every substantial change, through Git
  • A fortnightly group journal club and work-in-progress session
  • Written feedback at the mid-point and at the end

Deliverables

  • A project report in the format of a short research paper
