Bioethics, IPR & Regulatory Affairs in Biotechnology
Turning research into products raises ethical, legal and regulatory questions. This course gives scientists a working understanding of bioethics, intellectual property and the regulatory landscape for biotechnology in India and abroad.
Course overview
Bioethics, IPR & Regulatory Affairs covers ethical frameworks for research with human participants, animals and genetic data, then intellectual property: what can be patented, how to search prior art in free patent databases, and how technology transfer and licensing work.
The regulatory half outlines how biotechnology products, diagnostics and biologics are regulated in India (including the roles of national authorities and committees) and compares the main international pathways. The course is educational and is not legal advice.
Learning outcomes
By the end of the course you will be able to:
- Apply ethical principles to research scenarios
- Explain patentability criteria and the patent process
- Search prior art in free patent databases
- Describe technology-transfer and licensing models
- Outline regulatory pathways for biotech products and diagnostics
