Spatial & Health Data Science

Where things happen matters: for disease, crops and biodiversity alike. We are building capability in geospatial analysis, remote sensing and interoperable health data, with an emphasis on open data and privacy.

Relative abundance of the most common genera in eight samples from two groups. Composition data are relative, so they need compositional statistics.

Questions

What we want to know

  1. How can open satellite and survey data improve estimates of access to care?
  2. Which remote-sensing indices best track crop stress in smallholder settings?
  3. How can health-data interoperability standards be taught and adopted by small laboratories?

Approach

How we work on it

  • Open satellite, census and OpenStreetMap data
  • Bayesian small-area estimation
  • HL7 FHIR with synthetic data for teaching and prototyping

Open projects

Projects you can join

01

Travel time to primary care

Estimate access to health facilities from open road and facility data.

02

Crop condition from Sentinel-2

Track seasonal crop condition with spectral indices in public imagery.
